What are we doing in:

Language Arts: We are excited about descriptive writing projects.  Our unit in Science (Senses) lends itself to some interesting pieces of writing.  We’re watching for transferring our spelling knowledge into our free writing and attention to grammar.

Important Information:

  • Thank you for attending your child’s student led conference this past month.  The kids enjoyed sharing their learning with you and it was great to see the excitement in their faces.  They all did a super job and we’re very proud of them.

Language Arts: The students continue to write; reflecting on their writing and going through the editing process to ensure that their writing makes sense.  We continue to have guided reading daily.

Mathematics: Measurement.

Social Studies: Citizenship:  Belonging and Connecting

Science: Senses.

Important Dates:

March 9:  PD Day.  Students do not attend.

March 13:  Parent Council Meeting

March 15:  Report cards go home.

March 20 and 21:  Student Led Conferences.

March 23 – 30:  Spring Break

Important Information:

  • Student Led Conferences are coming up.  We encourage your child to come to their interview to lead the conference.  They will be excited to share their e-portfolio with you.
  • With our new snow, please dress your child appropriately.  It may be warmer, but without snow pants, we have a lot of wet kids.

Speaking Mondays: For Mrs. McKenzie’s class this is an opportunity for students to share something exciting that has happened over the weekend.  This is not a time to share items.  Show and Share will be in April.

Half way through the year!!

What are we doing in:

Language Arts: The students have been doing a lot of sequence writing; reflecting on their writing and going through the editing process to ensure that their writing makes sense.  We continue to have guided reading daily.

Mathematics: Addition and subtraction to 12.  Beginning of Measurement.

Social Studies: Citizenship:  Belonging and Connecting

Science: Building Things.

Important Dates:

February 3: Assembly hosted by Grade 3 (1pm)

February 9 and 10:  Teacher Convention.  No school for students

February 9, 10, 11 and 12:  Winter Games

February 14:  100 Day Celebration (AM) and Valentine’s Day Party (PM)

February 14:  Parent Council Meeting

February 14-16: Book Fair

February 20:  Family Day Holiday

February 27:  Fieldtrip to the Royal Alberta Museum

Important Information:

  • March Parent Teacher Interviews will include students!  We are excited that your child will be leading the interview to discuss their progress.  Student Led Conferences help students take responsibility for their learning and encourages goal setting.
  • The fieldtrip on February 27 to the Royal Alberta Museum is entitled:  Sensing Animals .  Each class requires a total of 4 adult supervisors.  Mrs. McKenzie’s class will need 2 parent helpers and Mrs. Barmby’s class will need 3 parent helpers.  If you are interested in helping for the whole day, please let your teacher know.  No siblings please L.
  • Because 100 Day and Valentine’s Day land on the same day, we will have a day full of games, activities and fun!  We will only require snacks for the afternoon.  If you were on the list for 100 Day snack parent, you will be asked to provide snacks for the end of the year party.  Thank you.
  • Grade Ones will be bringing home all their garbage/left over food from lunch.  This will include items you can throw in your compost.  We may make exceptions on hot lunch days and students can continue to recycle their juice boxes at school if they choose to.  We are noticing an excess of food that is tossed in the garbage.  Many schools are implementing this is Parkland and it is a success.  It helps parents understand waste and what their children are eating/not eating.

We are finally going to begin Show & Share in Grade 1B this month.  Students have the opportunity to either share a special event or bring in a special item to share with the class. Students are asked to only share if it is something special not just an everyday occurrence or item. Students will be expected to speak in front of the class on their own during snack time on their designated day.  The days for sharing are as follows :

Day 1 -Red Group (Rory, Autumn, Henry, Justin, Emily)

Day 2 – Green Group (Ethan, Dani, Lily, Tyson, Harper)

Happy New Year!!  Wow, 2012 came way too quickly!!

What are we doing in:

Language Arts: We are continuing to learn about writing, content and conventions.  The students continue to gain confidence in their reading and are becoming much more confident using strategies and we see all of the kids taking risks –  EXCELLENT!

Mathematics: Addition and subtraction to 12.  Beginning of Measurement.

Social Studies: Group responsibilities and group decisions.

Science: Building Things.

Important Dates:

January 13 at 10:50 am in the gymnasium:  Cultural Event:  “Les Boucherons”

January 17:  Parent council meeting.

January 31:  Professional Development Day.  No students attend.

Reminders:

*Please make sure your child returns their library books.  Our list of overdue books is getting long L.

*Please make sure boots are not worn in the hallway.  We want to keep our floors clean for our students, staff and visitors.

December Newsletter 2011

Grade One

What are we doing in:

Language Arts: Writing, writing, writing, reading, reading, reading!!  The students are immersing themselves in writing activities.  We are moving away from pattern writing and understanding what makes written work exciting.  The students are continuing to use all their strategies when reading and are encouraged to transfer their weekly spelling word knowledge into their writing.  The students are also sounding out words they do not know and show me their very best “inventive spelling”.

Mathematics: Addition and subtraction to 12.

Social Studies: Citizenship:  Belonging and Connecting

Important Items:

Christmas Concert: The Kindergarten and Grade One’s will be performing in their very own Christmas Concert on December 16th at 1:30 in the afternoon in the gymnasium.  Please read the attached letter for more information.

Christmas Hamper: Our boxes are getting full but I continue to encourage families to participate in contributing non-perishable food items and new, unwrapped gifts for our community hampers.  This year, more than any other year in the past, we have more families in need.  If you are able to, please have your child bring an item to the classroom before December 9th.  Thank you.

Classroom Christmas Party: Friday Afternoon, December 23rd.  The students will be making some Christmas Crafts, watching a Christmas video and having some treats.  Snack parents are:  Danika, Elizabeth, Preston, Rachel, Sierra and McKale.  Thank you.

Picking Up Your Child?: Thank you for letting me know if you are going to pick your child up from school.  A quick note in the agenda relieves a lot of stress.  Please wait in the bootroom instead of the hallways.  Thank you.

Grade One

What are we doing in:

Language Arts:

  • Printing practice with an emphasis on printing smaller and correct letter formation
  • Guided Reading in small groups reading pattern books to our friends
  • Printing words with correct spacing and left to right orientation
  • Weekly spelling words
  • Monthly spelling tests (Peeking tests and No Peeking tests).  We are looking for our grade ones to have long term memory and also to find words around the room.
  • Home reading

Mathematics:

  • Recognizing numbers 1 to 20
  • Counting 1 to 20
  • Printing numbers 1 to 20
  • Understanding the concept of more and less
  • Understanding and recognizing bigger groups and smaller groups
  • One to one correlation
  • Estimation

Report Cards:

Report cards will be sent home on November 28.  Please take the time to read over your child’s progress.  We are so pleased with all they’ve done.  We have to stop and remember it’s only November!  Great job grade ones!!

Gentle Reminder:

The cold weather is upon us and your children need to be dressed warm.  Please remember importance clothing items such as toques and mittens.  Unless announced by administration, students will be expected to go outside during recesses.
